Preparing your 4x4 for an overlanding trip in Zimbabwe

A 4x4 with a rooftop tent in the Zimbabwean bush

Zimbabwe rewards the prepared traveller. Whether you are heading for the Eastern Highlands, Gonarezhou or Mana Pools, the difference between a great trip and a long walk is usually decided before you leave the driveway.

Carry weight sensibly

Heavy items belong low and inside the vehicle where possible. The roof is for bulky but lighter gear — tents, chairs, tables. Overloading the roof raises the centre of gravity and makes the vehicle unstable on side slopes and in crosswinds.

A properly fitted roof rack with secure tie-down points keeps everything where you packed it, even after hours of corrugations.

Water and fuel

Never assume the next stop will have either. Jerry cans mounted in proper holders — not loose in the load bin — are the safe way to carry extra fuel and water. Secure mounting matters: a loose 20-litre jerry can is a dangerous projectile on rough roads.

Check the small things

Tyres, including the spare. Recovery points and a basic recovery kit. A working jack that actually lifts your loaded vehicle. These boring checks are what turn a breakdown into a story rather than a rescue.

If you are unsure whether your vehicle is ready, bring it past the workshop — we are happy to look it over and suggest the fitment that matches the trip you are planning.
